حضر بعض رجال الأعمال إلى شركة صغيرة تدعى "مايكروسوفت" في عام ١٩٨٠، بغرض مقابلة رئيس الشركة وهو "بيل جيتس".
كانوا يرتدون بذلات تحتها قمصان بيضاء اللون، تزينها أربطة العنق، ويحملون في أيديهم حقائب جلدية، وبدت على مظهرهم الأهمية، وقد كانوا كذلك بالفعل، إذ كانوا المديرين التنفيذيين لشركة آي بي إم. وقد كانت شركة آي بي إم حينذاك هي كبرى شركات تصنيع أجهزة الكمبيوتر في العالم.
وعندما وصل إليهم شاب صغير سألوه عن مكان مكتب "بيل جيتس"، فذهب بهم الشاب إلى المكتب، وحينما وصلوا إليه, جلس هذا الشاب الصغير على المكتب! فقد كان هو "بيل جيتس" رئيس شركة مايكروسوفت!
وفي ذلك الحين كان عمر "بيل جيتس" أربعة وعشرين عامًا فقط، بل بدا شكله أصغر من سنه الحقيقية، وقد أوحى شعره الكثيف، ونظارته الكبيرة، والنمش الذي يعلو وجهه، والبلوفر الذي يرتديه بأنه لم يتخط سن المراهقة، ولكن هذا الانطباع اختلف تمامًا لدى رجال آي بي إم، حيث انبهروا به عندما بدأ التحدث إليهم، فقد عرفوا أن "بيل جيتس" على دراية كاملة بالكمبيوتر داخليًّا وخارجيًّا.
وقد كانت أجهزة الكمبيوتر التي تنتجها شركة آي بي إم ضخمة، وكان بعضها يشغل حجمه غرفة بكاملها! وكانت الشركات الكبرى والقطاعات الحكومية تشتريه وقلة قليلة من الأشخاص العاديين كانوا يمتلكونه، وكانت صناعة أجهزة الكمبيوتر الصغيرة ما زالت حديثة العهد، وكان هذا السبب وراء زيارة رجال شركة آي بي إم إلى شركة مايكروسوفت، حيث كانت هذه الشركة الصغيرة هي المتخصصة في إنتاج أجهزة الكمبيوتر صغيرة الحجم.
ولم يمضِ وقت طويل حتى عقدت شركة آي بي إم اتفاقًا مع "بيل جيتس" وشركة مايكروسوفت, وكان هذا الاتفاق بداية عهد جديد في صناعة الكمبيوتر، ولكن حينها لم يكن "بيل" يعرف ذلك، وكان هذا الاتفاق هو ما جعله أغنى الأغنياء على وجه الأرض.
