في ليلة صافية مليئة بالنجوم، سار عالم يُدعى "جاليليو" إلى حديقته الخلفية، وكان يحمل تليسكوبًا جديدًا كان قد صنعه بنفسه. وقد استمر جاليليو في صقل عدسات تليسكوبه بأناة ورويَّة عدة أسابيع، فصار بإمكان التليسكوب أن يُكبِّر الأشياء بحيث يعطيها حجمًا أكبر من حجمها الطبيعي عدة مرات.
وجَّه "جاليليو" التليسكوب إلى أعلى، فظهرت أمامه فجأة مناظر باهرة، لم يرها أحد من قبله. وكيف لأحد أن يراها؟ فتلك المناظر لم تكن لتُرى بالعين المجردة. وعلى مدار الأسابيع التالية، جاب "جاليليو" السماوات بواسطة تليسكوبه. أدهشه ما رأى؛ فقد رأى جبالًا مرتفعة فوق سطح القمر! ونجومًا جديدة تشكلت من البقع الباهتة في السماء! ورأى أقمارًا تدور حول كوكب المشتري!
لكن اكتشافاته قادته إلى مشكلة، وهي مشكلة رهيبة؛ فقد أقنعه ما رآه بأن الأرض ليست هي مركز الكون، بل الشمس هي مركز الكون، وكانت تلك فكرة غريبة في عام ١٦٠٩؛ إذ اعتقد الناس لآلاف السنين أن الشمس والكواكب جميعًا كانت تدور حول الأرض مرة كل يوم، وكان هذا أيضًا هو اعتقاد رجال الدين في ذلك الوقت.
وفي عصر "جاليليو"، كانت لرجال الدين سلطة قوية في إيطاليا، وكانت لديهم محاكمهم الخاصة، وكانت تلك المحاكم تسمى محاكم التفتيش، وكان بمقدور تلك المحاكم أن تعتقل أي شخص يتحدث بما يعارض تعاليم رجال الدين، وأحيانًا كان ذلك الشخص يخضع للتعذيب أو القتل.
حتى إنَّ "جاليليو" نفسه كان في حيرة من أمره؛ فقد كان مؤمنًا بما يقوله رجال الدين، ولكن في الوقت نفسه كان ما رآه بعينيه يشير إلى حقيقة مغايرة.
وهي الحقيقة التي وضعت حياته على المحك.
