في أحد الأيام من عام ١٨٥٨، كان هناك صبيان يدعيان "أليك" و"بين"، يلهوان في مطحن الدقيق الذي يملكه والد "بين"؛ فيقفزان على جوالات الطحين، ويركضان حول آلات طحن القمح - كانا يلهوان ويلعبان، ولكن هذا الأمر كان يسبب الضجر لعمال المطحن الذين يريدون تأدية أعمالهم، فاستدعاهما أخيرًا والد "بين" إلى مكتبه وطلب منهما أن يقوما بعمل مفيد، فأراد "أليك" أن يعرف بالضبط ما هذا العمل المفيد؟ فأمسك والد "بين" حفنة من الحبوب؛ كل حبة منها مغطاة بقشرة سميكة، وأخبرهما بأنه من المفيد أن يجدا طريقة مناسبة لإزالة القشرة عن حبوب القمح.
وقبل الصبيان التحدي، ففي أول الأمر كانا يزيلان القشر باستخدام فرشاة الأظافر، وقد نجح الأمر في البداية، ولكنه كان يستغرق وقتًا طويلًا، فبحثا عن طريقة أسرع، وفكر "أليك" في المشكلة أكثر، فقد كان بارعًا في حل المشكلات، فتذكر رؤية حوض كبير مزود بمضرب دوار في المطحن، فذهب الولدان إلى العمل وشاهدا الحوض وهو يعمل، وطرأت فكرة على "أليك" في النهاية، فماذا لو تم إلحاق فرشاة خشنة تشبه فرشاة الأظافر الكبيرة، بحوض المضرب؟ فعندما تبدأ فرشاة المضرب بالدوران، سيتم إزالة القشور عن الحبوب أسرع!
وعرض أليك الفكرة على والد "بين"، فأعجب صاحب المطحن بما سمعه ووضعه تحت التجربة، وقد نجحت فكرة أليك! وربما لم يكن من المدهش أن الصبي البالغ من العمر أحد عشر عامًا أصبح مخترعًا عالميًّا شهيرًا - إنه ذلك الرجل الذي اخترع الهاتف.
