أخذ رجل طويل يذرع سطح السفينة جيئةً وذهابًا، فقد كان هو ورجاله في عرض البحر منذ سبعين يومًا، وتحديدًا منذ ٣ أغسطس ١٤٩٢؛ حيث أبحروا مسافة أكثر من ٤٢٦٥ كيلو مترًا من إسبانيا، والآن، بدأت اليابسة في الظهور. فهل تحقق أخيرًا حلم "كريستوفر كولومبس" بالوصول إلى جزر الهند؟
ظل "كولومبس" يتوسل إلى حكام البرتغال وإسبانيا سنوات كي يعطوه المال اللازم للقيام برحلته؛ فقد كان يريد اكتشاف طريق يربط بين أوروبا وجزر الهند، وذلك عن طريق الإبحار غربًا. وجزر الهند كانت تضم الصين، واليابان، والهند، ولم يكن أحد قد فعل هذا من قبل.
ولما أشرقت شمس صباح ١٢ أكتوبر ١٤٩٢، وصل "كولومبس" وطاقم السفينة إلى الشاطئ.
فجثا "كولومبس" على ركبتيه، وقبَّل الأرض وبكى؛ فيا لكم الثروات التي كانت بانتظاره! وسيعود إلى إسبانيا بطلًا متوجًا.
لم يكن "كولومبس" يعلم أن تلك الجزر لم تكن جزر الهند، فماذا كانت إذن؟ في الحقيقة، وصل "كولومبس" وطاقمه إلى أرض لم يصل إليها أحد في أوروبا من قبل؛ فقد اكتشف عالمًا جديدًا.
