بدأ الإصلاح والانفتاح الصيني في أواخر سبعينات القرن العشرين.
لم يكن هذا الإصلاح الذي استمر لأكثر من ثلاثين عامًا سببًا في تغيرات ضخمة في المناطق الداخلية في الصين فحسب؛ لكنه كذلك خلق معجزة في تاريخ التنمية الاقتصادية العالمية. والآن، يمر الإصلاح والانفتاح الصيني بمرحلة حاسمة، وأصبحت الصين الناهضة عنصرًا مهمًّا يؤثر في الاتجاهات السياسية والاقتصادية العالمية الحالية.
يرى الصينيون الإصلاح والانفتاح لم يكن حدثا وطنيًّا ضخمًا فحسب، بل هو يرتبط بحياة كل فرد منهم ارتباطًا وثيقًا، أما الأجانب فيعدُّونه سببًا في جعل الصين قريبة ومألوفة كما لم تكن من قبل. ومع ذلك، فإن فَهم هذا التغير التاريخي الكبير بخيوطه الكثيرة المتداخلة ليس أمرًا يسيرًا على الإطلاق، سواء على مَن عاشه بنفسه أو مَن شاهد من بعيد.
