"تعد قضية استرجاع الصور جزءا من معضلة أكبر في علم المعلومات، هي مشكلة استرجاع الأشكال غير التقليدية من مصادر المعلومات. وتتضخم هذه المشكلة في ضوء تحول كثير من مصادر المعلومات إلى الشكل الإلكتروني، ولكن تنفرد ""الصور"" عن باقي مصادر المعلومات بوضع خاص، حيث تسبق تقنيات إنتاجها تقنيات استرجاعها بمراحل.
ولأن الصور بطبيعتها حمالة أوجه، فهي تتضمن كثيرا من الملامح التي يصلح كل منها لأن يكون اهتماما مستقلا للباحثين في مجال ما. فغالبَاً ما تستخدم الصور في سياقات ومجالات بعيدة كل البعد عن الغرض الذي التقطت من أجله، لذلك يتكون مجتمع المستفيدين منها، والباحثين عنها، من فئات متعددة ومتباينة، مثل، مجتمع الصحفيين، والمهندسين، والباحثين في التاريخ، والمدرسين، والفنانين، والمصورين الفوتوغرافيين، والناشرين، ووكالات الإعلان، ... فضلا عن الجمهور العام.
ويحاول هذا الكتاب وضع الإطار العام لهذه القضية، والوقوف على قواعدها وتقنياتها، ووضع مجموعة من المواصفات المقترحة لإنشاء نظام نموذجي لاسترجاع الصور الصحفية.
ويعتبر الكتاب بمثابة دليل عمل في مؤسسات المعلومات، والمؤسسات الصحفية العربية، لا سيما أن كثيرا منها يعمل على تحسيب ورقمنة مقتنياتها من الصور، وأرشفتها على غير أساس علمي أو أكاديمي يستند إليه.
وتظل قضية ""استرجاع الصور"" إحدى قضايا علم المعلومات الشائكة، وملفا لم تكتمل أوراقه بعد، ومسألة أبعد ما تكون عن النضج والاكتمال، لذلك يمثل هذا الكتاب دعوة للبحث في هذا الموضوع، والعمل على هذا الملف، ونسأل الله أن يكون إضافة للمكتبة العربية، في مجال استرجاع المعلومات، ومجال الصحافة على حد سواء.
