لن يستغرب القارئ الذي على دراية بعلم الأعصاب من قبل، بعض الحالات التي يعرضها الكتاب هنا، مثل "الزهايمر ومتلازمة توريت ومتلازمة اسبرجر" فهي مواضيع سهلة الفهم وتحظى باهتمام شعبي واسع. ولكن هناك موضوعات أخرى تقدم بعض المفاجآت، مثل مناقشة "متلازمة كورساكوف" ومعنى آثار الذاكرة، في ظلام فقدان الذاكرة، أو ما وصفه "كورساكوف" باسم "المجال اللاوعي من الحياة النفسية".
ما يميز هذا الكتاب عن غيره من الكتب، هي اعتقاد درايسما أن المرض النفسي جزء لا يتجزأ من الثقافة المجتمعية، فالأمراض العصبية هي نتاج تلك الأزمنة والعصور. حتى وهو يحاول عرض الحقائق البيولوجية لهذه الأمراض فهو يشير إلى ارتباطها بقوة بالزمن الذي ظهرت فيه تلك الحالات والمتلازمات. وهذا ما يجعل الكتاب مقبولاً شعبياً وليس حكراً على المتخصصين والأكادمييين ويضيف إليه جانباً ممتعاً.
