تعتبر وسائل الإعلام على اختلاف أنواعها، المرئية والمسموعة والمقروءة، النافذة التي يطل من خلالها الأفراد على العالم، وأبرز مصادر تشكيل الرأي العام وتكوين التصورات حول الدول والشعوب والأحداث والقضايا المختلفة خاصة القضايا الخارجية التي يعتمد الجمهور في استقاء المعلومات حول تلك القضايا من مصادر أخرى فلم تعد وسائل الإعلام أداة لنقل المعلومات فقط، بل أصبحت أحد المحددات الرئيسية التي تشارك في تحديد ملامح سلوك الجمهور وقيمه وعاداته ومستوى معارفه.
ويتعاظم دور الإعلام في ظل الأزمات الدولية والصراعات الإقليمية والحروب وأحداث العنف المختلفة، حيث أشار بعض الباحثين إلى أن العنف يعد سمة محددة لتغطية الشئون الخارجية، وتقوم الصحافة بتقديم المعلومات ونشرها والتعليق عليها وتفسير خصائصها للوصول إلى غرس الآراء والاتجاهات المراد إيصالها لجمهورها مما يؤدي إلى زيادة قدرة الأفراد على إدراك خطورة هذه الأحداث على الفرد والمجتمع. فوسائل الإعلام حينما تنقل الأحداث لا تظل بمنأى عنها، وإنما تؤثر في الكيفية التي تضفي بها المعاني على الأشياء، ومن ثم الطريقة التي تتشكل من خلالها الثقافة التي تمثل المساحة المشتركة من التصورات التي يتفاعل خلالها الإعلام والجمهور. ويعتمد الجمهور على الصحف في متابعة المراحل الأولى لمواقف الصراع داخل المجتمع وخارجه ثم يصبح التليفزيون بعد ذلك المصدر الأساسي للحصول على المعلومات.
