ذات شتاء أوروبي لن أنساه وصلتُ إلى فيينّا في يناير من عام 1984 ، وبمجرد خروجي من المطار صرتُ مشتبكًا مع ورطة مناخية مباغتة عرّت كل تاريخ الدفء في حياتي، حالفَتها على الفور ورطة لغة ألمانية صلبة حبست لغة تواصلي في زنزانة نُطق ومَنطِق لشهور طويلة بطيئة.
احتجْتُ إلى زمن طويل حتى أقنع قلبي بالصبر على قراري، وإلى أن أروِّض قدميَّ على الثبات فوق هذه الأرض الجديدة؛ الأرض التي
دمرتها- ذات نزوة وطيش- حربان عالميتان وحوَّلَتَاها إلى أكوام من الخرائب، حتى كادت تبدو عصية على التحوّل إلى مأوى يليق بالبشر؛ لتتبدّل هذه الأطلال بعد سنوات قليلة من العزم و"المعافرة" كي تكون إحدى جنات الأرض كما غنّتنا بها أسمهان. تأثرتُ بمتابعة هذا التحول تأثُّرًا فاق انتقالي المفاجئ من إفريقيا إلى أوروبا، وعلَّمني الزمن أن أي حلم ممكن أن يتحقق ب"المعافرة" والصبر وبالقلق الملهم.
