ولأننا جميعًا مجرد نتاج لمحصلة ما نتخذه من قرارات، فنحن بحاجة إلى وجود فهم أفضل للبواعث الكامنة وراء تلك القرارات، وما يجعلنا نقتنع بشيء، وما يجعلنا نشتريه. وهذا أمر وثيق الصلة بما نناقشه، لا سيما أن العديد من النظريات التي تعنى بالسلوك الإنساني وتحاول تفسيره هي نظريات معيبة، وتستند في فكرها إلى التفكير الرغبوي أكثر مما تستند إلى الخبرة.
ويقتضي الالتزام بالأمانة التامة القول بأنه خلال المائة عام الماضية -وربما خلال الجانب الأكبر من تاريخنا- انصب جل التركيز الذي يستهدف فهم البواعث المحركة للسلوك الإنساني (البحث السلوكي كما يطلق عليه في الوقت الحالي) على البحث عن الأدوات النفسية والمادية، للتأثير على سلوك الأفراد وتغييره ومحاولة السيطرة عليه. والغاية من ذلك هي جعلنا أتباعًا أكثر طاعة، وأطفالًا أكثر تهذيبًا، وعاملين أكثر إنتاجًا، وأفرادًا في المجتمع؛ ومع توجه المجتمع نحو التصنيع والتطور نصبح مستهلكين طيعين وفرقًا وأفرادًا أرقى في الأداء. وتضمنت تلك الأدوات بعض الخيارات الغريبة على مر السنين، مثل: القمع، والتعذيب، والاختطاف، وأساليب الرقابة اللصيقة بل والعبودية، ولم يكن الأمن والسلامة المهنية من الجوانب التي اشتهر المصريون وبلاد الرافدين والرومان بل وحتى الأوربيون بالاهتمام بها.
