"تقع الرواية في 184 صفحة من القطع الوسط، وتتوزع على أربعة عشر مشهداً «تتقاطع وتتعامد عناوين مشاهدها مع عناوين سيرة المخرج الإيطالي فيديركو فيلليني؛ إما بشكل رمزي أو اعتباطي، وأي تشابه بين افتراءات السارد وبين حياة فيلليني واختلاقاته، هو محض استعارة فقط!» كما ورد في الإشارة الختامية التي تذيل الرواية. فبعد رواية «باب الليل»، التي طبعت عدة مرات وحصدت نجاحاً نقدياً واسعاً باعتبارها من أكثر المتون السردية العربية التي كتب عنها في السنوات العشر الأخيرة، يطل علينا وحيد الطويلة من زاوية أخرى بعيدة عن «المقهى»، التي اعتاد أن ينسج من داخلها عوالمه ومتخيله، لنلفي أنفسنا أمام تركيبة فسيفسائية جهنمية من الأنواع الحكائية، التي تمزج في بوتقتها بين الفن السابع وسيرة صناع سينما المؤلف وتقنيات المونتاج وسيرة التخييل الذاتي والتحليل النفسي والتحقيق السيكولوجي والباروديا السوداء ونصوص الأسر والتحليل الثقافي لظاهرة القمع السياسي. كل هذا بلغة صقيلة ذات طاقات إيحائية شاهقة، وضمن بناء معماري دقيق ومتشابك ينفلت من أسر شتى التأويلات والمفاهيم، ويخلط في توليفة فنية رفيعة بين الواقع والحلم والهذيان والافتراض والمونولوج الباطني.
يهدي وحيد الطويلة روايته إلى «من صرخوا ولم يسمعهم أحد. إلى من لم يستطيعوا أن يصرخوا».
