في سنين كتابتها الأولى، ماريا كتبت للمسلسل الكوميدي مرايا وساهمت بأنشاء مجلة فلة للفتيات ولها فيها مئات القصص.
ماريا الآن تسكن بين أميركا وسوريا، درست الكتابة الإبداعية في جامعة لوس انجلس.
حازت على جائزة Claire Carmichael الأميركية للرواية، كان لها شرف حيازة زمالة Women Authoring Change Fellowship 2016 وجائزة كتارا للرواية العربية عام ٢٠١٨ عن روايتها ”كوكب اللامعقول.“ وجائزة شومان لرواية الخيال العلمي ٢٠١٩ وجائزة خليفة عن روايتها "القلب خلف الضلع تماما" ٢٠٢٠ وجائزة الملتقى لناشري كتب الأطفال عن كتابها "أنا وهو." بسبب أعمال ماريا المتميزة استضافتها العديد من منتجعات الكتابة مثل OMI شمال نيويورك و Hedgebrook قرب سياتل كما استضافتها مهرجانات الأدب العربية مثل الشارقة القرائي ومهرجان الطيران الأماراتي.
في العامين الأخيرين نشرت ماريا قرابة الخمسين كتابا للأطفال واليافعين وجرى ترجمة بعضها.
في سعيها لدعم النساء الكاتبات، ماريا قامت بالتعاون مع ناشرين في الإمارات بتدريب كاتبات في ورشات للكتابة الإبداعية وساعدت أن تصل كتبهن الأولى للنشر كما درّست ماريا مساقا لكتابة الكتب المصورة على منصة "إدراك" التابعة لمؤسسة الملكة رانيا حيث انضم عشرات الألوف المتعلمين لهذا المساق

حين تطلب أم كنان من تيم وسامي قطف النارنج مقابل مكافأة قيّمة، يذهب تيم ويلحقه سامي رغم الخوف. من وراء الباب الخشبي العتيق، يسمعان صوت بكاء. "إنها خاطفة أطفال"، يقول سامي. وإلّا فماذا تفعل بزجاجة الحليب التي تحملها؟ يرسم تيم خطّته المُحكمة: تسلّل، تجسّس، هروب.
