جون لوكاريه (اسمه الحقيقي دايفيد جون مور كرونويل) دون سواه، صاحب عشرات روايات التجسس ذائعة الصيت، ومخترع شخصية الجاسوس الغربي الظريف "جورج سمايلي"، المنخرط أبداً في معركة حامية الوطيس ضد "كارلا"، الشخصية النقيضة والضابط في الـ KGB.
وهو بريطاني سليل الغرب الأوروبي وأحد كبار الأساتذة في التخييل الروائي البوليسي حول المواجهة بين الشرق والغرب.
كان لوكاريه لا يزال عميلاً سريا حين دغدغته غواية الأدب، فكتب أولى محاولاته الروائية، ووقّعها باسم لوكاريه المُستعار الذي أراده تغريبيّاً.
اشتهر الكاتب أيضا برفضه للقب "فارس" الممنوح من ملكة بريطانيا، وحواراته المطولة مع سليمان رشدي التي بلغت درجة البذاءة، بسبب رفضه مساندته بعد إصداره روايته "آيات شيطانية"، كما اشتهر في الآونة الأخيرة بمواقفه المعارضة لأيديولوجية الهيمنة الأميركية وحربها على العراق وما يسمى بالإرهاب.
