قررت سارة قطع كل صلة لها بماضيها حين نجحت في الهرب من ظلم عمّها وأحكامه الصارمة التي فرضها عليها باسم الدين. فقد أضحى هو وليّها بعد موت أمها واختفاء والدها. في بيروت بدّلت اسمها إلى مرام وخلعت الثوب الديني الذي ألزمها به عمّها والذي كان يخفي جمالها الفتان، وارتادت الجامعة كما حلمت على الدوام. لكن الماضي الذي توهمت أنها تحرّرت منه، برز لها بشخص خطيبها رشاد الذي كتب عليها صداقه الذي يعدّ بمثابة الزواج، ومن حقه إعادتها إلى بيت الطاعة بحسب ما تفرضه قوانين الأحوال الشخصية. شرعية الصداق لا يلغيها سوى طعن بوصاية عمّها، ومن أين لها ذلك وعمها يناصبها العداء، وما من سبب وجيه يقنع المحكمة بوجوب التفريق، ووالدها الذي تبيّن لها أنه لم يمت، كما قيل، لا يعرف له مكان؟
