تدافع العديد من النظريات اللسانية الحديثة عن فكرة مفادها إن جملة من الإنجازات العلمية والفكرية الحديثة، ضاربة جذورها في الفكر اللساني القديم، ومن ثمة فقد تبلورت بشكل كاف وصريح في إطاره. وتبعا لهذا تمت في نطاق هذه اللسانيات قراءات -وإعادة قراءات- عديدة متباينة، فضلا عن بحوث تراوحت بين التنظير والتطبيق، رامت الانخراط في هذا الفكر والخوض فيه بقصد الوقوف على قيمه العلمية، واكتشاف أدواته المنهجية سواء في حيز التصور النظري أو على المستوى الوظيفي التطبيقي، رغبة في استثمارها في حل الإشكالات العلمية التي تفرض نفسها حاضرا. ولعل المثال الأقوى في هذا الصدد، مشروع «تشومسكي» القائم بالأساس على دراسة للفكر الديكارتي محاولة منه إيجاد أصول لنظريته التوليدية التحويلية.
وعليه سيحاول هذا العمل الاشتغال -في إطار الطرح أعلاه- على ظاهرة لصيقة باللغات الطبيعية (ordinary languages)، وتشكل إحدى خصائصها الأساسية، هي ظاهرة الاستلزام الحواري (conversational implicature)، التي تؤسس لنوع من التواصل يمكن وسمه بالتواصل «غير المعلن» (الضمني)، بحجة أن المتكلم يقول كلاما ويقصد غيره، كما أن المستمع يسمع كلاما ويفهم غير ما سمع. ومن ثمة فإن الكثير من العبارات اللغوية، إذا روعي ارتباط معناها بسياقات إنجازها، لا تتحدد فقط فيما تدل عليه صيغها الصورية، لذا يلزم إيجاد تأويل آخر ملائم يحتم الانتقال من معنى صريح إلى معنى مستلزم، فعبارة «هل تستطيع أن تناولني الكتاب؟» مثلا، في سياق معين، يخرج بمعناها من السؤال إلى الالتماس. ولا شك أن هذا التأويل لا يتم بشكل اعتباطي، وإنما تؤطره وتوجهه الظروف المحيطة بالخطاب، من متكلمين وسياق ومقاصد وما إلى ذلك. الأمر الذي يجعل هذا العمل في صميم تداوليات الخطاب، التي أخذ البحث اللساني معها منحى متميزا، على اعتبار أن الاهتمام لم يعد منصبا على وضع نظريات للخطاب، وإنما عني بعملية التخاطب (التحاور) في حد ذاتها.
