لم يحظ الجسد الإنساني بالاهتمام الكافي الذي يعرضه كمحرّك اجتماعي أساس، وليس الاقتصار على النظر إليه من الناحية البايوطبية، فقد دعت الحاجة لإدامة الحياة بتكثيف الجهود، ولتطبيب الجسد ومحاولات ترميمه وترقيعه، إلا أن الاهتمام بالجسد ككيان له تمظهرات ينحتها عليه المجتمع ويظهره بصورٍ متعددة، لم يأت إلا في الفترات الأخيرة الماضية.
فالجسد ذلك الكيان الذي نُظر إليه على أنه جامد، لم يعد ولم يكن كذلك يومًا؛ فجميع تمحورات الحياة وصورها يؤديها الجسد، ويقوم بها بكل دقة وفق سلوكيات وأفعال الأفراد؛ فهو سر وجود الحياة بواقعها المادي، وهو مترجم لكل الأفكار والطموحات والمشاعر التي يمتلكها الإنسان، لتخرج بتصرف الجسد الذي يقوم بها وفق ما يريد ذلك الجسد.
إن المجتمع الذي يحيا فيه الإنسان يسطّر وينحت ما يريده على ذلك الجسد، فالإنسان يتعلم قيم مجتمعه الذي يعيش فيه وعاداته وتقاليده، وعلى أساس ذلك يكيّف جسده ويظهر به بصورٍ تلائم ذلك السقف الثقافي الذي يسود في المجتمع. وتمر الفترات الزمنية والجسد يتلقى كل أنواع الأزمات والتقلبات والتطورات؛ الأمر الذي يجعل منه خارطة لكل هذه الأشياء التي مرَّت عليه.
