كان عجيبًا وحادثًا فريدًا من نوعه أن يدخل الرئيس في تلك الظهيرة من هذا اليوم مَجمع المصالح الحكومية بميدان التحرير بمفرده في زيارة غير مُعلنة، وبدون حِراسة شخصية، أو مواكب هائلة ترافقه كطلائع جيش مُحارب وبملابس (كاجوال) غير رسمية ومنتعلاً حذاءً صيفيًا!.
ولفِت الرئيس وقت دخوله المَجمع انتباه موظفيه وأرباب المصالح ممن أتوا للمَجمع لقضائِها رغم اكتظاظه عن آخره بالمواطنين والذين تهللت وجوههم بالسعادة والفرح وتسابقوا على مصافحة الرئيس ومعانقته في صدق نابع من القلب وبادلهم هوَ نفس المشاعر وبنفس درجة الحرارة.
وطارت أنباء زيارة الرئيس لكبار مسئولي المَجمع من وكلاء وزارات ومديرين وغيرهم، فصُعقوا وبُهتوا وشحبِت وجوههم لزيارة رأس الدولة بمصر للمَجمع دون سابق ميعاد أو إنذار كما هو مُتبع في مثل تلك الحالات، فنزلوا على عجَّل ووجوههم تحمل قلقًا وارتباكًا واضحين ليكونوا في حضرته، وكان الرئيس قد تفقد عددًا من المكاتب لتوه بشكل مفاجئ، وظهر جليًا على صفحة وجهه معالم من الامتعاض والقرف والغضب! وبادره وكيل وزارة التربية والتعليم بالتحية، ثم قام بتقديم نفسه له، فحياه الرئيس لكن بفتور، ونظر له شذرًا، وقال بلهجة حملت سخرية واضحة :
- فجـل، وجرجير، وخس، وبصل في المكاتب! ما شاء الله! وكأننا في سوق العبور!.
وسكت مليًا وتابع بنفس السخرية :
- قمامة مُلقاة في الزوايا والأركان وعلى الأرض بجانب أجولة محشوة بأوراق وملفات قديمة! أين عمال النظافة بحق الله؟ حوائط تعرّت من طلائها، ذباب عشش وباض وتغوط على المصابيح والأسلاك، قذارة وأوساخ في كل مكان! لا حول ولا قـوة إلاَّ بالله!.
