تحدد الثقافة التي تصوغ الوعي للإنسان– فردًا أو شعبًا أو أمة– حدود دائرة المحيط التي يمنحها الولاء ويخصها بالانتماء. فهناك ثقافات تقف بانتماء صاحبها عند حدود القبيلة، وأخرى لا تجعل صاحبها يتجاوز جغرافية الوطن، وثالثة تقصر الانتماء والولاء علي الجنس– بالمعني العرقي والسلالي– ومن الثقافات ما تجعل الدائرة الحضارية هي محيط الانتماء، ومنها ثقافات أممية طمحت إلى حصر الانتماء في طبقة من الطبقات الاجتماعية علي امتداد الإنسانية، أو إلغاء ما عدا الدائرة الإنسانية من دوائر الولاء والانتماء.
وفي كتابات عبد الله النديم تركيز واضح على أن دائرة انتمائه الثقافي هي الدائرة الشرقية– بالمعني الحضاري، الذي يجعل تميزها نابعًا من مقابلتها للحضارة الغربية، التي كانت تقتحم أبواب الشرق وحياة أهله في ذلك التاريخ. وفي هذه الكتابات أيضًا ما يؤكد على اشتمال هذه الدائرة الشرقية– كجامع حضاري أكبر– على العديد من دوائر الانتماء الفرعية التي لا تناقض بينها وبين هذا الانتماء إلى الدائرة الحضارية الشرقية.
والأمر الذي يؤكد أن (الشرق) في هذه الثقافة لم يكن معني جغرافيًّا فحسب، وإنما كان دائرة حضارية، هو استخدام هذا المصطلح– (الشرق)– في أدبيات التيار الفكري الذي انتمى إليه النديم كمرادف لمصطلح (الإسلام)، فالحضارة الشرقية والجامعة الشرقية، والرابطة الشرقية، والنهضة الشرقية، والشعوب الشرقية.. الخ.. الخ. كان المعني بها حضارة الإسلام وجامعته ورابطته ونهضة شعوبه، والتي تضم مللًا وأقوامًا هي جزء أصيل وعضوي من حضارة الإسلام– وإن ميزتها لغات أو معتقدات روحية لا تمثل بدائل لهذه الطوائف عن السمات الجامعة لحضارة الإسلام.
