كان ستيفن آر. كوفي معلمًا قديرًا.
الملايين من الناس يعرفون هذا الأمر، فهو ليس سرا، لكن ما قد يفهمونه بشكل كامل هو أنه كان معلمًا قديرًا لأنه كان في الأصل طالبًا قديرًا؛ فهو لم يولد ثم أصبح د. ستيفن آر. كوفي بين عشية وضحاها، فعندما كان طفلًا صغيرًا يلعب مع أصدقائه، لم يلق أحاديث عن مبادئ التعاون عند مواجهة مباراة صعبة، وحينما أصبح أكبر سنًّا، لم يكن يلقي محاضرات على أصدقائه القادمين لزيارته عن ترتيب الأولويات عندما كانوا يجمعون اللعب قبل التهام وجبة الظهيرة الخفيفة. بالطبع كان ذلك سيكون أمرًا رائعًا، ولكن شيئًا من هذا لم يحدث.
لقد اهتم بالعالم من حوله، وطرح أسئلة، وبحث عن معرفة جديدة، وعندما وجد مبدأ المعرفة الذي يمكن أن يجعله أفضل، فتح ذراعيه له. يمكنك رؤية ذلك في كتابه "العادات السبع للناس الأكثر فعالية"*؛ حيث يسأله الناس طوال الوقت: "كيف؟ كيف توصلت إلى العادات السبع؟".
كان يبتسم ببساطة بعد سماع هذا السؤال، ويتدبر لحظة ثم يجيب في توقيت مثالي: "لم أتوصل لها". كل من يتلقى بالطبع هذه الإجابة، كان يشعر بالحيرة، لكن قبل أن يطرح الناس أسئلة أخرى كان يقدم لهم الإجابة.
كان يجيب: "لقد ألفت الكتاب، لكن المبادئ كانت معروفة من قبلي بزمن طويل؛ حيث إنها تمثل إلى حد كبير قوانين طبيعية، وكل ما فعلته هو أنني جمعتها معًا لأقدمها للناس".
كانت المحادثات هي قاعة محاضراته، فعندما تقابله يستقبلك بمصافحته الودودة وحضوره الجذاب، وسواءً كنت فردًا من العائلة أو صديقًا مقربًا أو كنت أحد المعارف، حتى إن كنت قد التقيته مصادفة، فإنك كنت ستقضي معه الساعات القليلة التالية في مناقشة هادفة عن العائلة والأصدقاء والعمل... والحياة.
إن المبادئ التي قدمها مبادئ خالدة، فلقد ظل لأكثر من ثلاثين عاما يدرس ويمارس وينقح المبادئ المقدمة في الكتاب المذكور آنفًا، وكان يتطلع دائما لتعليم تلك المبادئ، لجعلها مفهومة وقابلة للتطبيق.
