كثيرًا ما طرحت على نفسي هذه التساؤلات؛ فعندما بلغت الرابعة والعشرين من عمري، بعد عام واحد فقط من تخرجي في كلية إدارة الأعمال، تم الزج بي في وظيفة إدارية؛ وذلك نتيجةً للظروف أكثر منها للقدرات. كنت أعمل في شركة أوراكل، التي كانت وقتها لا تزال شركة برمجيات ناشئة متفردة, يتضاعف حجمها سنويًّا. وبعد عام من تدريس برمجيات شركة أوراكل للموظفين الجدد، أصبحت مسئولًا عن التدريب على مستوى الشركة، وتم تكليفي بتأسيس جامعة جديدة تابعة للشركة، وهي مهمة لم أكن أعرف عنها أي شيء على الإطلاق. بدا أن تلك الوظيفة تفوق قدراتي كثيرًا، ومع ذلك لم يكن من الحكمة أن أبدأ حياتي المهنية برفض ترقية.
ذهبت إلى العمل بدون رؤية شاملة، وبدون أدنى فكرة عن كيفية تأسيس جامعة تابعة لشركة، باستثناء توجيهات قليلة فقط من رؤسائي، لكني فهمت أن مهمتي كانت حاسمة لمستقبل الشركة؛ فإذا لم يتعرف فريق المبيعات الخاص بنا، وكذلك الاستشاريون الميدانيون على منتجنا الجديد بشكل وافٍ، فربما قضى ذلك على الشركة الناشئة؛ لذا، كان أمرًا مهمًّا أن أعرف كيفية فعل ذلك بشكل صحيح. دفعني جهلي, مقترنًا بتلك الحقيقة القاسية بأهمية عملي المرتبط ارتباطًا مباشرًا بمستقبل الشركة، إلى الحديث مع كل شخص وأي شخص يسعني التحدث إليه من أجل سد هذه الفجوة المعرفية. لقد كان جهلي تواضعًا ناتجًا عن اليأس.
كان فريقي يتكون من مجموعة من حديثي التخرج، الذين كان جديدًا عليهم أيضًا التعليم الخاص بالمؤسسات؛ فجميعنا كانت تنقصنا الخبرة، ولكننا كنا نتوق لإحداث فارق. فأخذنا نعمل معًا باحثين عن حوارات ومقابلات مع مسئولي المنتج, وكبار المديرين الميدانيين، في محاولة منا لفهم المعلومات المطلوب تدريسها ولمن تدرس وفي أي ميعاد. وبقليل من الموارد وبجداول زمنية قصيرة للغاية، حافظنا على بساطة نموذجنا، إن الجامعة تريد أن تحشد الخبراء الحاليين والموارد المتاحة، ومن ثم تنشئ بيئة تعليمية يمكن من خلالها نقل المعرفة التقنية لأولئك الذين يعملون مع العملاء.
