يرى هاليداي وجود منظومة قيم عالمية مشتركة تتفق عليها الحضارات والأديان، من دون الانجرار إلى مثالية طوباوية، مع تأكيده الدائم على السمة "الواقعية" للكونية الجذرية التي ينادي بها. يقول إن جوهر هذه الكونية ومكوّناتها الرئيسية ليست نتاج الفكر الغربي حصراً، بل الفكر الإنساني بعمومه الذي أسهمت فيه وما تزال كل ثقافات العالم، سواء راهناً أو عبر قرون التاريخ الطويلة. أهمية كتاب هاليداي هي في توسطه الفكري: فهو يرفض الدعاوى الثورية، يسارية كانت أو ليبرالية، التي تستسهل الانقلاب على الواقع وتفشل في تقديم بديل فعال. ويرفض أيضاً الإقرار بـ"الأمر الواقع" والتسليم به من دون الانخراط في عملية مفتوحة لتحسين شروطه. لن يسعد الثوريون بواقعية هاليداي في هذا الكتاب، ولن يسعد أنصار "الأمر الواقع" بـ"مثالية" أطروحته حول "الكونية الجذرية" المتمرّدة على الحاضر. بمعنى ما، هاليداي يريد حلماً ثورياً يرشده الواقع، ويقرّ بأمر واقع يثوّره الحلم.
