منذ قرون خلت، تحتضن كتلة جبال آرارات، عند منابع دجلة والفرات، مجموعة قبائل أثبتت عبر التاريخ تجانسها الاجتماعي ووحدتها اللغوية، إنها الكرد. ومع أن عدداً كبيراً من المختصين في الشؤون الكردية (الكردولوج) بدأوا منذ أكثر من نصف قرن بدراسة الكرد دراسة منتظمة، ما تزال معلوماتنا عن كردستان غير كافية. وهذه الدراسة التي يقدّمها كردولوجي بارز، هي أول مؤلف شامل يتناول مختلف أوجه المسألة الكردية.إن في دراسة المسألة الكردية فائدة عظمى لفهم الوضع السياسي الراهن. فمنذ اندلاع الحرب العالمية الأولى، والمباشرة بتحديد مناطق النفوذ بين الدول العظمى، وإنشاء دول تخلف الإمبراطورية العثمانية، غدا وضع الكرد معروفاً لدى الدبلوماسيين، بل بدا الأمر خلال فترة قصيرة وكأن آمال هذا الشعب وجدت إقراراً دولياً بها من الدول الكبرى التي اتخذت من نفسها حكماً لتحديد الوضع الدولي. ولكن، خلافاً للوعود المعلنة والتصريحات المفخمة، لم تخطط حدود بلدان المنطقة بمقتضى الاعتبارات القومية والإنسانية، بل وفق مشيئة رجال الأعمال الكبار ودول الغرب الاستعمارية ومصالحها. أما الضمانات التي منحت للشعب الكردي المتمثلة بالوصاية عليه نظرياً من قبل عصبة الأمم، فلم يتمتع بها إلا بصورة واهية، وحسب رغبات وزارات المستعمرات.
