لا تزال المثلية من المحظورات في البلدان العربية. فيما يعترض عليها رجال الدين لكونها خطيئة شنيعة، تمتنع الصحف عن الحديث عنها مباشرة وتتناولها بأسلوب يكتنفه الغموض، فتشير إلى "ممارسات مخجلة" و"سلوك منحرف". وبرغم القبول المتنامي للتنوع الجنسي في أماكن مختلفة من العالم، فإن المواقف منه باتت في الشرق الأوسط أكثر تصلباً. يرسم براين ويتاكر صورة أشخاص يعيشون حيوات سرية يعتريها الخوف في كثير من الأحوال، صورة أبناء وبنات يتعرّضون للضرب وتنبذهم عائلاتهم أو يرسلون لتلقي علاج نفساني "ليبرأوا"، صورة رجال يُحتجزون ويُجلدون لتصرّفهم كالنسوة أو آخرين قد سجنوا فقط لأنهم حاولوا العثور على الحب عبر الإنترنت. في خضمّ الحديث عن إصلاح في الشرق الأوسط، تبقى المثلية إحدى المسائل التي يفضّل تقريباً معظم الأفراد في المنطقة تجاهلها، ومع ذلك ثمة حيّز ضيق من التغيير والتسامح. الحب الممنوع، المُفيض في المعلومات والمكتوب بأسلوب جذاب، يلفت إلى هذا الموضوع الشديد الأهمية وإن بعد تأخير طويل.
