"لماذا حلمت هذا الحلم؟" سأله الضابط بنبرة صارمة. "أنا لست مسؤولاً عن أحلامي"، أجاب القروي ببرودة أعصاب، "أنا مسؤول فقط عن دجاجات أمي وديوكها"، قال ذلك ومدّ إصبعاً إلى أنفه. "حاول ألا تحلم حلماً كهذا"، قال الضابط من غير مبالاة وهو يبصر دخان سيجارته المتصاعد في الفضاء. "لا أفهم ماذا تقول"، قال القروي وحكّ إحدى عينيه بظهر يده. "أنت حلمت حلماً كبيراً ذا علاقة بتغيّر جذري في حياة الناس". "إني لم أسمع بكلمات كهذه، اعذرني، دعني أفهم" قال القروي وهو يسند ظهره إلى خلف الكرسي بعد أن كان طوال اللقاء جالساً على حافته. ثم تابع أثناء حديثه معلناً أن حلمه لم يكن كبيراً ولكن تفسير الإمام جعله مهولاً وأنزله كصاعقة انقضت على بلد كأنه لم يسمع قصّة في حياته ولم ير حلماً في نومه.
