تعالى صوت الطرقات على الباب، وقد تبادل الجميع نظرات قلقة، قبل أن يومئ النبي -صلى الله عليه وسلم- برأسه إلى الأرقم، الذي اتجه لفتح الباب، حيث طالعه وجه عمر المضيء وإن وشت ملامحه بلا شيء. تحرك عمر بآلية تامة ليطالع وجوه المسلمين، بينما تركزت عيناه على وجه النبي -صلى الله عليه وسلم- الذي فعل ما لم يتوقعه أحد. ففجأة وبلا أي مقدمات جذبه النبي جذبة عنيفة. وفي لحظة نادرة تهاوى جسد عمر. كاد حمزة أن يتحرك.. بل كاد أبو بكر أن يتكلم.. ولقد أراد عليّ أن يكسر السكون، إلا أن كل ذلك لم يحدث. وكأنما ذابت الأفعال والأقوال وكل شيء في صمت رهيب. سكون تام خيّم على الجميع، وكأنما توقف الزمن للحظة قلما يجود بمثلها مرة في كل جيل، قبل أن يقول النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم:- أما آن يا عمر؟ تأمل عمر وجه الرسول -صلى الله عليه وسلم- وبهدوء عجيب انفرجت شفتاه ليقول:- بلى، آن يا رسول الله.. أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله، وأن محمدًا رسول الله. انساب الصوت العذب إلى الآذان، ولربما عجزت العقول عن استيعابه، في حين اشرأبت أعناق أهل مكة لينظروا إلى دار الأرقم بن أبي الأرقم. حيث ولد فجر جديد، وولدت معه أسطورة، عربية هذه المرة، واسمها عمر.
