من قرية نجدية ضائعة في أعماق النفوذ، انطلق جابر السدرة في البحث عن سميح الذاهل، صديق الطفولة. لم يمت سميح، فقد كان يظهر بين الفينة والفينة، ويلتقي بكلامه المبهم، ثم يختفي من جديد. وطوال كل تلك السنوات، كان كل شيء يتغير، إلا سميح الذاهل الذي بقي مثل يوم أن خرج من الخب لأول مرة، وكأن لا سلطان للزمان أو المكان عليه. قادت رحلة البحث عن سميح جابراً إلى واحات نجد وقراها، ومدن الحجاز وضفاف الخليج، وأرض الأنبياء في فلسطين، وجبال عمان وغوطة دمشق، وناطحات السحاب في العالم الجديد. سنوات طويلة مرّت تزوّج فيها جابر العديد من النساء، وأنجب العديد من الصبيان والبنات، وتحوّل كل شيء من حوله، ولكنه لم يجد سميح الذاهل، رغم أنه قابله ورآه وحدثه عدة مرات. وجاءت لحظة الحق، وجابر لا يزال ينتظر ويأمل أن يعود سميح إلى الخب، ولكنه يموت، دون أن يعود. وقبل أن يموت، كتب جابر مخطوطاً يصف فيه ما رآه وما عاناه وما يبحث عنه. ووقع المخطوط بيد أحد أحفاد جابر، فقاده في رحلة أخرى للبحث عن سميح دامت أربعين عاماً في التيه والضياع، كان فيها هو أيضاً من المنتظرين. وهذه الرواية ليست إلا بعضاً مما جاء في مخطوط جابر السدرة من أحداث غريبة، وأمور عجيبة.
