كاتب وصحفي أميركي.
اشتهر بكتاباته في العلوم والتكنولوجيا، وخاصة السير الذاتية للعلماء.
تمت ترجمة كتبه إلى أكثر من عشرين لغة.
حاز كتابه Chaos أو "نظرية الفوضى" على أفضل مبيعات عالمية.
يعمل حالياً في جريدة "وال ستريت جورنال".

تبدأ نظريّة الفوضى (كايوس) من الحدود التي يتوقّف عندها العلم التقليدي ويعجز. فمنذ شرع العلم في حلّ ألغاز الكون، عانى دوماً من الجهل بشأن ظاهرة الاضطراب، مثل تقلّبات المناخ، وحركة أمواج البحر، والتقلّبات في الأنواع الحيّة وأعدادها، والتذبذب في عمل القلب والدماغ. إن الجانب غير المنظّم من الطبيعة، غير المنسجم وغير المتناسق والمفاجئ والانقلابي، أعجز العلم دوماً. وشرع هذا الواقع في التغيّر تدريجاً في سبعينيات القرن العشرين، عندما همّت كوكبة من العلماء الأميركيين والأوروبيين للاهتمام بأمر الاضطراب وفوضاه. وتألّفت تلك الكوكبة من علماء الفيزياء والرياضيات والبيولوجيا والكيمياء، سعوا للإمساك بالخيوط التي تجمع ظواهر الفوضى كلّها. من هذه الزاوية يمكن فهم عبارة من نوع "إن رفّة جناحي فراشة في الهند قد تحدث فيضانات في نهر الأمازون". بعد قراءة هذا الكتاب، لن تنظر إلى العالم بالطريقة التي اعتدت أن تراه بها من قبل.
