تجري أحداث الرواية في خطين متوازيين، بين نموذجين يمثلان حياة البشر جميعا، أحدهما: خير مطلق، والآخر شر مطلق، «وليد» الضابط الملتزم المجتهد الذي يشكل شخصيته عاملان أساسيان: الحزم، والحب، فهو لا يقبل التهاون في عمله بأي حال من الأحوال، جَادٌّ فيما يوكل اليه من مهام، لكنه في الوقت نفسه محب لكل ما حوله ومن حوله واولهم زوجته «مها» التي تكون هي نقطة الالتقاء بين «وليد»، و«شريف» ذلك النموذج الآخر الذي لا شيء في حياته الا اللهو العابث، والسعي وراء ملذاته، حتى دخوله كلية الشرطة لم يكن حبا في النظام أو خدمة للوطن – مثل وليد – وانما بريق يجذب عينيه الى السلطة والقوة والأكتاف المرصعة بالنجوم والنسور.
