وجه أندلسي مشرق، يقرب علينا بالأسلوب الممتع، والعرض المبسط، والمعالجة اليسيرة والنفس الأندلسي اللطيف، ما توضع في علم التصريف، من تجريد بعيد، وخشونة مصطنعة، وتعقيد ثقيل، فهو يتخطى تاريخ عصره، ويكون مقدمة للوضوح والبيان والتيسير.
فقد انصب في علم التصريف عشرات من الكتب، تعالج موضوعه ومواده بمختلف الوسائل والأساليب، فكان منها حتى القرن السابع زاد وافر، يزخر بالمتون المجففة الضنينة العطاء، والشروح المطولة البعيدة المنال، والحواشي والتقييدات المتداخلة، حتى وصف هذا العلم بأنه أعسر من الإعراب، وأضيق سبيلاً على المرتادين.
وعندما تناول ابن عصفور هذا الميدان العلمي، استطاع أن ينفحه بأنفاسه الأندلسية، ويصبغه بألوان البساطة والسلاسة والصفاء ليقربه إلى النفوس والعقول. فقد استوفى جمهور المادة الصرفية، مما يحتاج إليه كل دارس أو باحث أو مؤلف، وعرضه بأسلوب تعليمي ميسر، يقيم حواراً ودياً بينه وبين قارئيه، ويشركهم في صياغة النتائج والمعلومات، ويوظف ما في نفوسهم من تساؤلات ومشكلات، تتعلق بالموضوع وعناصره ومبادئه وقواعده.
ولذلك أعجب به العلماء، حتى إن أبا حيان النحوي كان يلازمه في جميع أسفاره، ويجمع منه النسخ المختلفة.
وآخر ما وصل إلى يده منه نسخة ضخمة، سماها "الممتع الكبير" وقد حقق الدكتور فخر الدين هذا الكتاب باعتماد ذلك، مع أصول خطية عليها حواش لأبي حيان، ونقول من خطّ المؤلف، وغيره من العلماء، ثم منحه ما يسَّره وقربه إلى الجميع، بخبرته الأصيلة المتقنة، تفسيراً وشرحاً وفهرسة فنية كاملة.
