كان جد ابن رشد وهو محمد بن أحمد بن رشد المالكي الذي توفي سنة 520 هـ بعد مولد حفيده بشهر ((قاضيا للجماعة بقرطبة كما كان فقيها عالما حافظا للفقه مقدما فيه على جمع أهل عصره، عارفا بالفتوى على مذهب مالك وأصحابه، بصيرا بأقوالهم واتفاقهم نافذا في علم الفرائض والأصول من أهل الرياسة في العلم، والبراعة والفهم مع الدين. وكما كان جده من كبار الفقهاء، كان كذلك أبوه إذ أن ابن رشد قد استظهر على أبيه الموطأ حفظا ولم يأخذ ابن رشد الفقه عن أبيه فحسب بل أخذه عن أبي القاسم بن بشكوال وأبي مروان بن مسرة وأبي بكر بن سمحون وأبي جعفر بن عبد العزيز وأبي عبد الله الماذري. وإذا كان ابن رشد قد تعمق في دراسة الفقه إلى هذا الحد وأخذ عن أكثر من معلم فقد أداه هذا إلى وضع كتابه القيم ((بداية المجتهد ونهاية المقتصد في الفقه)) وقد ((أعطى فيه أسباب الخلاف وعلل ووجه فأفاد وأمتع به ولا يعلم في فنه أنفع منه مساقا)). وأصبح بذلك أوحد عصره في علم الفقه والخلاف وقد عبر ابن فرحون عن اتجاهه في الفقه فقال: ((وكانت الدراية أغلب عليه من الرواية)) وهذا يدل على غلبة منظر العقلي عنده. وقد تولى ابن رشد وظيفة القضاء في مختلف بلاد الأندلس فوصل بذلك إلى أرفع المناصب وهو منصب القاضي شأنه في ذلك شأن أبيه وجده ثم تولى منصب قاضي القضاة في أيام الخليفة يوسف بن عبد المؤمن بعد أن كان قاضيا بأشبيلية. أما من جهة علم الكلام فقد تعمق في دراسته ولا شك أن نقده لمذاهب علماء الكلام وتفنيده لآرائهم كما سيتبين فيما بعد، يكشف لنا عن دراسته مذاهب الفلاسفة وشرحه لأرسطو ودراسته للطب. وبهذا جمع ابن رشد بين هذه الميادين العديدة بعد دراسته الطويلة طيلة حياته. حتى قال عنه ابن الآبار: ((إنه لم يدع النظر ولا القراءة منذ عقل إلا ليلة وفاة أبيه وليلة بنائه على أهله وأنه سود فيما صنف وقيد وألف وهذب واختصر نحول من عشرة آلاف ورقة.
