يدعو محمد أركون، من على صفحات هذا الكتاب، إلى منهجية تفكيكية يتمّ تطبيقها من أجل استكشاف شتى مستويات التراث وزخرفة اشكالياته الأساسية عن مسارها التقليدي المألوف. وقد قام بتحليل المنظومة الفكرية الإسلامية، كيفية نشوئها وتشكلها واشتغالها في التاريخ عبر القرون. ثم بين أنها لا تزال تحول حتى الآن دون فتح الأضابير التاريخية وتجديد الفكر بشكل جذري في المجال العربي-الإسلامي. لقد رأى أركون بأن هذه المنظومة الفكرية الإسلامية تشكل بمبادئها وصياغاتها القطعية ومسلماتها نوعاً من الحجاب الحاجز الذي يحول دون رؤية الأمور كما جرت عليه بالفعل طيلة القرون الهجرية الأربعة الأولى. ويرى بأن سيطرة المخيال الجماعي على قطاعات واسعة من الناس تشكل قوة كبرى يصعب اختراقها، فهي تفرض نوعاً من "الحقائق السوسيولوجية" التي تمنع ظهور الحقائق الحقيقية: أي التاريخية والعلمية أو الفلسفية ثم يلجأ أركون في أماكن عديدة في كتابه إلى تعداد المسلمات التي تنظم الاعتقاد الإسلامي وتتحكم به. ويفهم من ذلك بأن شرط انفتاح الفكر العربي-الإسلامي، على العقلانية الحديثة عند أركون، لا يمكن أن يتم بشكل فعلي ودائم وناجح إلا بتفكيك مفهوم الدوغمائية ومفهوم الأرثوذكسية الخاصين بتراثه هو بالذات. وهدف أركون من وراء منهجه ذاك هو الخروج من مرحلة الأرثوذكسية الجامدة، إيديولوجية كانت أم تيولوجية، لتوسيع قليلاً دائرة المفكر فيه أو المسموح التفكير فيه داخل إطار اللغة العربية والمجال العربي، ليكون بالإمكان، حينها فقط، تحمل مسؤولية التراث والحداثة على السواء، ومن ثم طرح مسألة الأصالة والمعاصرة بشكل جديد ومختلف.
