طرقات على الباب متخاذلة، مرتجفة خائفة، مضطربة، متكسرة. تسابقت البنتان إلى الباب، فقد طال انتظارهما، ولم يأت الغائب المنتظر، والشمس مالت إلى الغروب. ما إن فتح الباب حتى ارتمى جسد منهك إلى الداخل، متثاقل كتلك الطرقات الخفيفة العريبة، فارقته حيويته ونشاطه، وكان الوجه مغبرا مصفرا شاحبا، غرب عنه نوره وإشراقته المعتادة، وفارقته بسمته العذبة الصافية. جلس على عتبة الباب، والأختان تتبادلان النظرات بلا كلام، فالموقف هو الذي يتكلم، ويعبر عما تحمله هذه النفس الطارقة..، اتجهت العيون إلى المقبل، تسألانه في صمت وخوف، فتجيب القسمات الباهتة واللون الأصفر بلا حروف: لا أحد في الدار، كل رحل عنها وبقينا نحن كالحمامتين ننتظر أوبتك، ننظر إليك لكي تعوضنا النظر إلى كل الراحلين سواك، هم سافروا وأنت الذي بقي لنا، لكن من المسافر: هم أم نحن، أم أنت؟ ! من الراحل منكم: أأنت أم هم ؟ !
