ينضوي كتاب غابرييل بيتربرغ المفاهيم الصهيونية للعودة تحت مظلة الدراسات اليهودية النقدية التي ترفض الحل الصهيوني القومي لمسألة اليهودية من جهة، وتعارض انصهار اليهود وذوبانهم في مجتمعاتهم من جهة أخرى، وبدل ذلك تحاول هذه الدراسات استكشاف وطرح بديل تحرري لليهود، يكون في آن إنسانيتنا ومتناغما مع خصوصيات الجماعات اليهودية من دون أن يقع في مطب الهويات القبلية. وللوصول إلى هدفه المنشود، يعمد بيتربرغ في كتابه إلى التنقيب في الأدبيات الصهيونية الإيديولوجية وبما قاله أو كتبه رواد الصهيونية وآباؤها، ويكشف عن تناقضاتها البنيوية الداخلية ومغالطاتها التاريخية بما في ذلك توليفاتها القومية، ويحلل الصهيونية من خلال تأطيرها تاريخيا في سياق علاقتها بالحركات الاستعمارية والقومية الأوربية. ويرى أن علاقتها بالموروث اليهودي هي علاقة انتقائية وأداتية هدفت إلى شرعنة الفكر الاستعماري باعطائه طابعا مسيانيا مشوها.
