أقوى الأفكار تكون دائما تقريبا بسيطة، وغالبا ما تنطلق من مصادر غير محتملة. وما كتاب كيلي، الذي عنوانه مدير الأحلام The Dream Manager توثيق لهاتين المسلمتين. ومنذ أن وجدت المنظمات، طفق قادتها يبحثون عن طرائق لإلهام العاملين فيها، والحيلولة دون تسربهم منها إلى ما كانوا يتصورونه أمكنة جديدة للعمل تنعم بميزات أفضل. لكن ما حدث أنه في السنوات الثلاثين المنصرمة، صار عدد العاملين، المتشبثين بفكرة بقائهم في الشركة نفسها طوال مدة عملهم، يتناقص، لذا بدأ الاهتمام بالحفاظ على هؤلاء العاملين في شركاتهم ينمو بسرعة. وفي هذه الإيام التي يتزايد فيها النقص في العمالة الماهرة في سوق العمل – وهذا منح العاملين قوة لم يسبق لها مثيل – غدا البحث عن حل فاعل لمشكلة الاحتفاظ بالعاملين في عالم الشركات، هاجسا لها. ويدرك التنفيذيون في أيامنا هذه أن تكلفة فقدان الناس الجيدين لم تعد مقصورة على نفقات توظيف عاملين جدد والاحتفاظ بما تبقى منهم، إذ إنها وصفة للإخفاق. ويقر حتى أكثر المديرين تشككا، بأن إحدى أهم الميزات التنافسية، التي يمكن أن تنعم بها شركة، هي قدرتها على الاحتفاظ برأسمالها البشري الآخذ في النضوب، وتحفيزه.
