يعد كتاب (افتراق ولد معد) – لهشام بن محمد الكلبي (204 هـ ) - واحدا من المؤلفات المهمة في التاريخ والأنساب، وقد روى في كتابه كثيرا من الأخبار عن افتراق القبائل التي كانت متناثرة في كتب عديدة، كل منها يعنى بمجموعة قبائل من أصل واحد. وقد أورد في كتابه أخبار ولد نزار بن معد؛ وهم أربعة: مضر وربيعة وإياد وأنمار، وكانت منازلهم مكة، وأرض العرب يومئذ على خمسة أقسام. وكان هشام ذا حافظة ساعدته على حفظ التاريخ والأنساب، وهو عالم بأنساب العرب وأخبارها ومثالبها، غزير التأليف في هذه الموضوعات، وكان أبوه أستاذه الأول، أخذ عنه نسب قريش. وقد تحدث ابن الكلبي عن نفسه قائلا: ''كنت أستخرج أخبار العرب وأنساب آل نصر بن ربيعة، ومبالغ من عمل منهم لآل كسرى وتاريخ سنيهم من بيع الحيرة، وفيها ملكهم وأمورهم كلها". ومن هنا فإن لابن الكلبي فضلا على أهل الأخبار والأنساب والتاريخ؛ لأن مؤلفاته كانت العمدة في هذه العلوم.
