دفعنا لتأليف هذا الكتاب إيمان راسخ بأهمية تأثير حضارة قرطاج لا فقط في تاريخ البلاد التونسية بل وفي تاريخ البحر الأبيض المتوسط ولقد أنسنا عند المهتمين بهذه الفترة رغبة في أن يوضع على ذمتهم مؤلف يسد فراغا في المكتبة العربية بحكم افتقارها حتى اليوم إلى مرجع باللسان العربي إذا ما استثنينا بعض المحاولات القليلة الجادة. ولما كان الاتجاه اليوم ينحو إلى تدريس تاريخ هذه الحضارة باللغة العربية فقد سعينا إلى أن تكون عبارة الكتاب على سهولتها تجربة لتطويع لغتنا للتعبير التاريخي الدقيق... ولم يشكل ذلك في الحقيقة الواعز الوحيد الذي حثنا على صياغة هذا الكتاب بل أن يقينا عميقا بأهمية ما حققه البحث التاريخي على امتداد الفترة الأخيرة من تقدم قد رسخ في أذهاننا مشروعية العمل الذي نعرض ثماره على قرائنا فقد شملت جهود البحث كامل أرجاء الإمبراطورية القرطاجية تقريبا ... وهو ما وفر للمختصين فرصة لتنزيل تاريخ هذه القوة في إطاره المتوسطي ولكن بكل أبعاده العسكرية والإقتصادية والثقافية وطبيعي أن تتراءى لنا اليوم صورة قرطاج بمظهر يختلف عما تعودت تقديمه الأبحاث الأولى وأمكن لنا استجلاء أوجه التأثير الذي مارسته على الحضارات المجاورة ومدى تأثير هذه الحضارات بدورها على الحضارة القرطاجية وهو ما أكسب قرطاج هوية متفردة ذلك أنها جمعت بين التأثيرات الموروثة عن البلاد الفينيقية بحكم شرقية المهد الذي انحدرت منه والتأثيرات التي اكتسبتها من الثقافات المجاورة لينصهر كل ذلك في ثقافة أثرت في تاريخ المتوسط وأثرته.
