يسعى هذا الكتاب لتقديم صورة شاملة ومركزة عن الوضع اللغوي المركب بالمغرب في علاقته بقضية الهوية، وكيف ينعكس ذلك على المدرسة المغربية وبرنامجها في تعليم اللغات. فالمغرب واحد من أهم المختبرات اللغوية في الوطن العربي؛ حيث يعاني، على مستوى اللغة، مشكلة رباعية معقدة؛ عناصرها: العربية، والعامية، والأمازيغية، والفرنسية، مع غياب للتوازن في النمو فيها بين اللغات المتداولة، وهي التي تحددت أوزانها بناء على عوامل تاريخية وسياسية، بحيث باتت تعزز التوجه الفرنكوفوني على حساب اللغات الأصيلة للمغاربة، وانفتاح المغرب على العالم الناطق بالإنجليزية، أو دولة جوار مهمة كإسبانيا. يفصل الكتاب هذه العلاقات وإشكالياتها، من خلال التعريف بهوية المغرب، وكيف تشكلت عبر الزمان، وأسئلة الحاضر بشأنها، ثم يبين مكانة اللغة العربية وبعض مشكلاتها بالبلد، وخاصة الدعوة إلى العامية التي يهتم بتوضيح جذورها وأسسها الفكرية. كما يتناول بالتفصيل وضع الفرنسية، ودخولها إلى المغرب، ويكشف عن مجالات انتشارها وأسبابه. وكذلك ما يتعلق بالحركة الأمازيغية، ومحورية اللغة في خطابها الأيديولوجي. ويبين، الكتاب، أخيرا، انعكاسات ذلك على قضية التعليم في المغرب، وما يسميه المؤلفان ((الفوضى اللغوية بالمدرسة المغربية))، ومشكلات تدريس اللغات والتدريس باللغات، ويسعى لتقديم اقتراحات عملية لحلها.
