وضع الكتاب الحالي في شتاء 1846 وخلال العام 1847 في الوقت الذي كانت قد اتضحت فيه أمام ماركس المبادئ الأساسية لنظرته التاريخية والاقتصادية الجديدة. وقد أتاح له كتاب برودون ((مذهب التناقضات الاقتصادية أو فلسفة البؤس)) – وكان قد صدر لتوه – فرصة تطوير هذه المبادئ بمعارضتها لأفكار رجل سيشغل منذ ذلك الوقت المكان الرئيسي بين الاشتراكيين الفرنسيين حينئذ. وخلال الفترة التي كان فيها الرجلان ينفقان ليالي بأكملها في باريس في مناقشة المسائل الاقتصادية تباعدت طرقهما أكثر فأكثر. وقد أكد كتاب برودون أن هناك بالفعل هوة لا يمكن تجاوزها بينهما، كما أن تجاهلها لم يعد ممكنا. وقد سجل ماركس بهذا الرد القطيعة التي لا رجعة فيها. ويمكن أن نجد مجمل حكم ماركس على برودون في المقال الذي نقدمه كملحق لهذه الطبعة، والذي نشر للمرة الأولى في الأعداد 16 و 17 و 18 من صحيفة ((سوسيال ديموكرات )) في برلين.
