خلافا لكثير من الكتب الأخرى عن القيادة المدرسية، يقوم هذا الكتاب بالعمل على المزج ما بين النصيحة العملية والبحث العلمي. فمعظم الكتب التي تتناول هذا الموضوع توجه اهتمامها إما إلى النصيحة أو إلى البحث ولكن ليس الاثنان معا. إننا نعتقد أنه في هذا الوقت المحدد من تاريخ تعليم طلاب المرحلة الممتدة من روضة الأطفال وحتى الصف الثاني عشر في الولايات المتحدة، فإن كتابا كهذا لا يعد مفيدا فقط وإنما ضروري كذلك، لأن الدعوات التي تنطلق من أجل اعتماد أساليب وممارسات تستند إلى البحوث لم تكن أبدا من القوة كما هي عليه في الوقت الراهن. وعلى نحو مشابه فإن الدعوات إلى إيجاد قيادة مدرسية تترجم إلى تحصيل علمي متقدم للطلاب لم تكن بمثل هذه القوة في أي وقت من الأوقات. واستجابة إلى كلتا الدعوتين فقد قمنا بإجراء تحليل متعمق بشأن البحوث الخاصة بالقيادة المدرسية التي أجريت على امتداد 35 عاما وعثرنا على دراسات ترجع إلى العام 1978 وحتى العام 2001 التي كانت تتفق مع المجموعة المختارة من معاييرنا. إضافة إلى ذلك فقد قمنا بإجراء تحليل للعوامل خاص بدراسة استطلاعية مستمدة من تحليلنا المتعمق وتم إعطاؤه إلى أكثر من 650 مديرا معتمدا. وللرد على أولئك الراغبين حقا في معرفة الجوانب المحددة لمنهجية عملنا والافتراضات التي تشكل الأساس للاستنتاجات التي توصلنا إليها، فإننا نقدم ما نعده معلومات فنية ضرورية في سلسلة من الملاحظات بدءا بالصفحة رقم (24). ومن أجل توفير التوجيه العملي لأولئك الذين يواجهون التحديات اليومية في قيادة مدرسة ما، فإننا نترجم نتائجها جميعا إلى توصيات محددة من أجل عملية التطبيق. إننا نعتقد أن نصيحتنا سوف تساعد أولئك الذين يهتمون ببحوثنا على أن يفهموا وبشكل أفضل كلا من غايتنا ومحور اهتمامنا. إننا نعتقد بصورة أخرى أن مناقشتنا للبحث سوف تساعد أولئك المهتمين بنصيحتنا العملية، على فهم قاعدة البحث الصلبة التي تشكل الأساس لتوصياتنا.
