تشتد الحاجة إلى مدخل جديد في الفلسفة، في أواخر هذا القرن، يكون بمثابة لوحة تتمثل فيها خلاصة الملامح الرئيسة التي طبعت التيارات الفلسفية، لتشير إلى سماتها وواقعها، لأن معظم ما كتب بالعربية من مداخل قد طال عليه الأمد، ولم يعد معبرا عما استجد في عالم الفلسفة، لذلك حرصت غالبا أن أعرض هذه الملامح الجديدة، التي تمخض عنها هذا القرن، ونحن على وشك توديعه، وإن كانت الفلسفة –خلافا للعلم- لا يلغي حديثها قديمها، وإنما يحاوره، ولا يتجاوزه تجاوزا حاسما في معظم الأحوال. وإذا كان الغرض من الكتابة الأدبية فيما يرى بعض الكتاب أن يجعلك تبصر بخيالك وتشعر بوجدانك، فإن الغرض من الكتابة الفلسفية أن تجعلك تفكر، في المشكلات التي ناقشها الفلاسفة، على نحو آخر غير الذي فكروا به. بل أن تستهويك إلى أن تفكر في مشكلات أخرى جديدة، لم ينتبه إليها من تقدم من الفلاسفة.
