بعد حادث الأقصر الإجرامي الذي راح ضحيته أكثر من 60 شخص، طلبت مني جماعة تنمية الديمقراطية كتابة ودراسة عن "التوترات داخل التجمعات السياسية ذات الطابع الديني" كان ذلك في عام 1998م، ثم طورت هذه الدراسة لأقدمها في ندوة تنظمها "مؤسسة الفرقان للتراث الإسلامي" التي يرأسها الشيخ أحمد زكي يماني في لندن في مارس عام 2004م، ثم تكررت الكتابة والمحاضرة عدة مرات عن هذا الموضوع حتى قررت أن أجمع كل ذلك في هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيديكم. ويبدأ هذا الكتاب أو "الدراسة" بفصل عن خبرتي الشخصية بهذه التجربة وأسباب اهتمامي بها، ثم تليه فصول الدراسة الأصلية عن الجذور التاريخية لجماعات العنف، والأسس الفكرية والفقهية المغذية لها، والمصادر الفكرية لها، وأخيرًا المراجعات التي صدرت مؤخرًا وملاحظاتي عليها. ثم أنهي هذا الكتاب بالمقال الذي نشر في جريدة ((الحياة)) في نهاية عام 1997 م بعد حادثة الأقصر كما ذكرت؛ لأن ما ورد فيه ما زال صالحا حتى الآن لمن يريد أن يستفيد من علاج هذه الظاهرة.
