هذا الكتاب الذي نقدمه للقارئ الكريم هو دراسة موجزة ومكثفة عن أحد رجال الفكر والعلم والأدب في تاريخ التراث العربي: يلقي الضوء على بيئته وأبرز معالم حياته، ويعرض لأهم وجوه إبداعاته ومنجزاته، وهو أبو بكر بن طفيل الأندلسي الذي اقترن اسمه في الأندلس والمغرب العربي وفي بلاد المشرق العربي والإسلامي باسم روايةٍ فلسفيةٍ بديعةٍ عنوانها: (حي بن يقظان) وهذه الشّهرة الواسعة لابن طفيل لم تقتصر على البلاد العربية والإسْلاميّة بل تجاوزتها إلى بلاد غربيّة كثيرة ترجمت هذه الرّواية، ونقلت من أخباره وأعـماله. ولم يتوقّف تقدير هذا المبدع الأندلسي على الزمان الذي عاش فيه (القرن السّادس الهجري – الثاني عشر الميلادي) بل تجاوزه وصولاً إلى العصْر الحَديث . • وهذه الدراسة تكتسب أهمّيتها من عدد من العناصر : ١) فهي تُعرّف بهذا العالم المفكّر الأديب الذي برز في عصره - على الرّغم من تعدد مواهبه - بأمرين مهمين: صنعة الطب وإتقان الفلسفة. ٢) تعرض لجوانب من أخباره وأشعاره وممارساته المهنية. ٣) تعرض للقارئ قصّته الشهيرة (حي بن يقظان)، وتتابع الأصداء التي تركتها في مؤلفّين أندلسيين ومشارقة، إضافة إلى أصداءٍ واسعة جاءت من اهتمام الغربيين بالقصّة ومن تقليد هذه القصة أو الانتفاع بها على درجاتٍ من الأخذ، والانتفاع والمحاكاة
