عجيب هو سبيل الحياة! مَنْ مِنَّا يُخيَّر أن يأتي الدنيا أو لا يأتي؟ ومَنْ مِنَّا يُخيَّر أن يغادر الدنيا أو يبقى فيها؟ وبين هذه وتلك يوجد سبيل الإنسان في الزمان والمكان، فيُصَيَّرُ على أمورٍ ويُخَيَّرُ على أخرى؛ فمَنْ مِنَّا مثلًا يختار أمه وأباه وإخوته؟ ومَنْ مِنَّا يختار لغته التي ينطق بها، وشعبه ووطنه الذي ينتمي إليه، ودينه الذي يؤمن به؟ ولكن بالمقابل، مَنْ مِنَّا لا يملك أن يختار بين الخير والشر أو بين العدل والظلم؟ ومَنْ مِنَّا لا يُخَيَّر بين الكفاح والجد، واللعب والكسل؟
إنه بالفعل سبيل يستحق التأمل والنظر، لذا؛ اختار المازني هذا الكتاب الذي يُعَبِّر فيه عن تأملاته في النفس والحياة، حيث تناول فيه التجارب الإنسانية في جوانبها الأدبية والاجتماعية والنفسية والتي شكلت بدورها فكره ووجدانه، فعَبَّر عنها في أسلوب نثري بديع، وجسَّدها من خلال ألفاظه وكلماته.
