شاهد «سام أوستر» أمه تقتل والده في المطبخ. وعاش بقية حياته حابسًا هذه الحادثه في صدره دون أن ينبس بها لأي أحد. وخلال الوقت الذي أنجب فيه «سام أوستر» إبنه «بول أوستر»، عاش «بول» مع أب غريب وغامض، تكتنفه الأسرار ويحيط نفسه بأسوار وأحاج كثيرة. لم يرد إلى ذهن «بول» بأنه لن يتمكن من معرفة والده وسبر أغواره إلا بالكتابة، وبعد موت والده تحديدًا، عن طريق العبث في أغراضه وبيته وسيارته والفوتوغرافات والألبومات المحشورة في أدراج غرفة نومه. يكتشف «أوستر» لاحقًا تفاصيل ما حدث لوالده والآثار التي كان عليه تحملها ويحاول العثور على منبع كل طباع والده الغريبة وتفسيرها. يقول بول أوستر عن كتاب المذكرات هذا: "إنه، بشكل أو بآخر، جوهر أعمالي كلها". وفيما يؤكد هارولد بلووم أن وليم شكسبير قد اخترع البعد الإنساني، فإن بول أوستر يؤمن من جهته بأنه قد فعل الشيء نفسه بالنسبة للعزلة بدءًا من كتابه «اختراع العزلة» الذي هو بمثابة مذكرات عن والده الذي توفى بشكل غير متوقع. فضلاً عن أن الكتاب هو في الوقت ذاته تأمل شخصي في طبيعة الذاكرة والخسارة. إن كتب أوستر التالية، بما فيها 16 رواية، قد وضعته كسيّد من أسياد الرواية الحديثة، ومن أفضل من تعامل مع الشعور بالعزلة ووعيها.
