وسارت مريم عبر طريق جبلي مرتفع داخل المستوطنة، بين المباني البيضاء ذات الشكل الموحد، والتي لا تتعدي ثلاثة طوابق، حتى وصلت إلى منزلها في نهاية المستوطنة. وما أن وصلت إلى منزلها البسيط حتى ارتمت على الكرسي المجاور للباب وقذفت حقيبتها بعيدًا، بعد أن ظهرت عليها ملامح التعب والضيق.. وكانت أمها في المطبخ المعلق به ثمار الثوم وأوانٍ فخارية تحضّر الغداء، مرتدية مريلة المطبخ على ملابسها اليهودية التقليدية، وتغطي شعرها بغطاء الرأس يظهر من أسفله شعرات حمراء.. بدينة الجسم والوجه، ذات عينين جاحظتين وأنف كبير ذي نهاية مستديرة. تملأ يديها وملابسها رائحة الطبخ، بينما كان إخوتها الصغار يلعبون بالمطبخ وهي تنهرهم.. فصاحت من الداخل: - ها قد أتيتِ.. كنت أعتقد أنك ستقضين عطلة هذا الأسبوع في أورشليم. فصاحت بصوت مرتعش: - ألا تريدوا أن ترونني؟ - بالعكس.. ولكن اليوم قد ظهرت عليك ملامح التعب والإرهاق. فردت مريم بقوة: - لقد مللت من الحياة هنا.. كل شيء هنا كئيب ومقبض.. المساكن عبارة عن كتل خرسانية كأننا في سجن.. الكل هنا يراقب بعضه ويخاف من بعضه.. ليتني بقيت في أورشليم. فردت الأم قائلة: - ولكن تلك هي حياتنا التي لن نستطيع أن نغيّرها.. لقد جئنا إسرائيل ولم تحتوِ جيوبنا سوى على الفتات.. لولا أبوك وعلاقاته هي التي جعلتنا في هذا المستوى.. ثم لا تنسي أنك تعيشين في أفخم مستوطنة وأجمل مجمع سكني بها. - وأين هو الآن؟ أكيد يقوم بعض أعمال السمسرة.
