احتاج العالم لأكثر من قرنين من الزمن حتى يغير من نظرته للتبغ، لينتقل التبغ من مادة تفيد في علاج عدد من الأمراض إلى مادة تسبب وتؤهب للإصابة بمئات الأمراض وأهمها السرطانات وأمراض القلب والأوعية. وما أن أدرك العالم الغربي الحمل الثقيل الذي يلقيه التدخين على الصحة العامة والفردية من جهة، وعلى الاستنزاف المادي لخزينة الدولة من جهة أخرى، حتى بدأ بشن حملة لا هوادة فيها لإبعاد الناس عنه، ولدفع المدخنين لتركه، حتى وصل الأمر في السنتين الأخيرتين إلى منع التدخين في الأماكن العامة، وأماكن العمل وحتى في المطاعم والمقاهي. وبالتالي أصبح المكان العام الوحيد المسموح بالتدخين فيه هو الفضاء الطلق. ولقد ساهمت هذه الإجراءات في تراجع عدد المدخنين في هذه الدول بشكل كبير. بالمقابل، فقد أخذ هذا المسار، وللأسف، طريقا عكسيا في دول العالم الثالث، ومن بينها بالطبع دولنا العربية. إذ تكمن الخطورة في مجتمعاتنا في انتشار التدخين بين اليافعين من الجنسين، مع ارتفاع أعداد النساء المدخنات، خاصة في ظل الانتشار الوبائي للأركيلة ليس في البيوت فقط بل في المطاعم والمقاهي أيضا. ومن هنا جاءت ضرورة هذا الكتاب الذي أحاول فيه محاربة التدخين من خلال شرح وتفصيل خطورة التدخين، عبر استعراض المشاكل الطبية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية الذي يسببها على الصعيدين العام والخاص، ومن خلال تقديم الحلول العلاجية لمن يرغب بالابتعاد عنه، متبنيا في ذلك منهجا علميا طبيا.
