في الوقت الذي ما زلنا فيه نطلق على كسب الوزن تعبير صحة، تصنف المراجع الطبية العالمية وعلى رأسها منظمة الصحة العالمية البدانة باعتبارها مرضا. وانطلاقا من قناعتنا باعتبار البدانة مرضا، حاولنا أن نقدم في هذا الكتاب المعلومات الأساسية التي نستطيع من خلالها مواجهة خطر البدانة، كونها المرض الوحيد الذي يجد علاجه عند المريض نفسه وليس في وصفات الطبيب. إن تلمس العديد من الدول حجم مشكلة البدانة، خاصة في ظل التسارع الكبير في نسب انتشارها، جعلها تعد برامج وطنية لمكافحة البدانة، تركز بشكل أساسي على الأطفال كونهم الضحية الأولى لهذا الوباء. إذا كان موقفنا سلبيا من البدانة، فهذا لا ينعكس بأي حال من الأحوال على نظرتنا إلى البدين خاصة الطفل الذي نعتبره أحد ضحايا النمو المشوه لمفهوم العصرنة. نحاول أولا شرح آلية تشكل البدانة معتمدون على الجانب النظري لمفهوم الطاقة المتواجدة في الأغذية، وعملية تحول الفائض منها إلى نسيج دهني يشكل أساس البدانة. وفي القسم الثاني من الكتاب نستعرض أسباب واختلاطات البدانة، أما في الجزء الثالث فنتطرق إلى كيفية السيطرة على البدانة مبتعدون عن مفهوم الحمية السحرية لنقترب من مفهوم النظام الغذائي المتوازن. ومن ثم نعرج على العلاج الدوائي والعلاجي للبدانة. آثارنا أن نخصص جزءا مستقلا للبدانة عن الطفل لما لهذا الموضوع من أهمية وانعكاس سلبي على صحة الطفل الجسدية والنفسية. آمل أن يساعد هذا الكتاب في تعديل مسار الانحدار نحو طعام غير صحي تاركين الطعام الصحي الذي كانت تعده جداتنا وأمهاتنا في ذلك الزمن الجميل.
