نسب الكتاب لابن أبي زرع عدد من المؤرخين الكبار الذين عاصروه أو كانوا في زمان قريب من زمانه، مثل علي الجزنائي في (جنا زهرة الآس) ومحمد بن الخطيب السلماني في (الإحاطة)، ومحمد بن مرزوق العجيسي التلمساني في (المسند الصحيح الحسن)، وعبد الرحمن بن خلدون الحضرمي في (كتاب العبر وديوان المبتدأ والخبر)، وكذا عدد كبير من العلماء والأدباء والمؤرخين الذين جاءوا من بعدهم مثل أحمد المقري القرشي التلمساني صاحب (نفح الطيب). موضوع القرطاس هو تاريخ المغرب عموما وتاريخ مدينة فاس خصوصا كما يدل عليه اسمه، بداية من الدولة الإدريسية الحسنية إلى سنة 726 من سنوات عهد السلطان المريني عثمان بن يعقوب بن عبد الحق المشهور بكنيته أبي سعيد. أسلوب ابن أبي زرع أسلوب فقيه أو عدل متوسط المعرفة بعلوم اللغة، وعباراته تختلف باختلاف المؤلفين والرواة الذين ينقل عنهم ولا ينسب إليهم كلامهم في أغلب الحالات، فلهاذا يوجد في هذه العبارات البليغ والمتوسط والركيك. طريقة ابن أبي زرع ليست طريقة الحوليات التي جرى عليها أغلب المؤرخين المسلمين في العصر الوسيط، ولكنها طريقة من يؤرخ للدول، فهو يذكر الدولة ونسبها وتشعب قبائلها ومراحل تأسيسها ثم يذكر سلاطينها واحدا واحدا وما قاموا به من أعمال، ثم يذكر في نهاية الكلام على كل دولة ما حدث في أيامها من أحداث اجتماعية واقتصادية وظواهر طبيعية كوفيات الأعيان ورخاء الأسعار وانتشار الأوبئة والمجاعات ونزول الأمطار بغزارة وظهور نجوم غريبة.
