لعل ما يميز بلاد المغرب عموما والمغرب الأقصى خصوصا عراقة حضارته وتجذرها في التاريخ البشري منذ أقدم العصور، بل وحتى في عصور ما قبل التاريخ، وما ذاك إلا لموقع المغرب الجغرافي المتميز في طرف القارات العتيقة التي سكنها الإنسان منذ ملايين السنين، وتفاعل سكانه النشيطين مع الحضارات الأولى الناشئة على ضفتي البحر المتوسط الجنوبية والشمالية. ومن ثم نجد ذكر المغرب مترددا في النصوص القديمة الباقية مما كتبه المصريون والفينيقيون والإغريق واللاتينيون، كما نجد أهم المراكز المنتشرة على شواطئ المغرب الشمالية والغربية كسبتة وأعمدة هرقل وليكسوس معروفة موصوفة عند الرحالة الجغرافيين القدامى، محددة بدرجات الطول والعرض مع ذكر التضاريس وما تحتويه من ضروب النبات والحيوان وظروف عيش السكان بقدر ما تسمح به معلومات تلك العصور السحيقة.
