تعد مطالعة كتب التاريخ زاداً لا بد منه وعظة ينتفع بها ذوي الألباب والعقول وإن بعض من يطلع على أخبار الأمم السابقة قد تتفجر في نفسه دواعي الخير والعمل، فيزهد في الدنيا، ويرغب في العمل لحياة العليا، والاستعداد لها. وفي كتب الروضتين سرد للوقائع والأحداث التي وقعت في زمن الدولتين النورية والصلاحية إلى السنة التي توفي فيها صلاح الدين وهي سنة تسع وثمانين وخمسمائة، وفيه أيضاً سرد للأشياء مغرفة فيما يتعلق بأحوال أولاده ومن يتعلق بهم، وحوادث أدركها المؤلف حتى قبل وفاته.
وقد ابتدأ من سنة تسعين التي تتلو سنة وفاة صلاح الدين فذكر ما فيها وفيما بعدها ما فاته ذكره في كتاب الروضتين وأسماه الذيل على الروضتين وهو الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا اليوم، وقد شاء العلماء وذوو الفضل بمؤلف الكتاب فقالوا أنه كان شيخ الفقراء وحافظ العلماء حافظاً ثقة، علامة مجتهداً.
وقد عني السيد عزت العطار الحسين بنشر الكتاب ومراجعة أصله وطبعه كما راجعه على النسخة الفوتوغرافية المحفوظة بدار الكتب زوده بهوامش لغرض تفسير مبهمة، وألحق بالكتاب فهارس عامة بالوفيات والتراجم على ترتيب السنين، ووضع فهرساً بالبلدان حسب الترتيب الأبجدي وختمه بفهرس للأعلام بحسب الحروف الأبجدية.
